Little Bells
for mixed choir (SATB) and piano
words by Walt Whitman (1819–1892)
Difficulty: Medium-Advanced
In these fast-paced times, it is more important than ever to celebrate awareness, concentration, and perception--and to take the time to slow down and listen to our surroundings. For this reason, this poem by Walt Whitman ("I heard you, solemn-sweet pipes of the organ") may be even more relevant today than when it was written in the 1860s. I hope the music helps to communicate Whitman's (and my own) sense of wonder at the sounds and sensations we encounter every day.
Premiere: Chronos Vocal Ensemble, Edmonton, AB, January 2018
The score is available from Renforth Music.
