A Flame in the Embers
for mixed choir (SATB) unaccompanied
words by Marjorie Pickthall (1883–1922)
Difficulty: Medium-Advanced
Order from publisher
Some music is all about images. When reading Marjorie Pickthall's poem, I was struck by the rich atmosphere – the contrast between a radiant garden and a sombre night – and the film-composer part of me had fun translating it into music.
The demo below features Vancouver's 8-voice Musica Intima in a reading session. A different full-choir recording of this piece is also included on the Chronos Vocal Ensemble's FRESH CD. You can also hear/see them sing it live here.
